Wanderersv Waterpark Match Report
27/03/2007
A Win Against Waterpark.
On a magnificent autumn’s day on the Lansdowne Road back pitch we managered to do enough to repel a determined Waterpark side that played with a fearless, nothing to lose attitude 24-14.
The score doesn’t do the closeness of this match any justice as Waterpark contributed so much to the affair with the commitment they brought to the game all across the park. We had talked a lot during the week about the importance of continuing to raise the bar and making sure that we didn’t let our standards drop in our two remaining AIL matches.
Perfect conditions and the opportunity to play plenty of positive running rugby, rewarding ourselves for the long hard slog that we had endured. So a big wake up call it was when it took to the 37th minute for any points to be scored and they were Waterparks with a well deserved converted try. We reacted with a well constructed try in the right-hand corner with Captain Bevan Cantrell finishing.
Five to Seven down at half-time and plenty said about the need to get back to the basics and be a lot tougher on the ball as we had struggled to hold on to it for more than one phase in the 1st 40. David Fitzgerald was over for a try 5 minutes into the half with Billy Tracey converting. Waterpark came storming back and after 55 minutes scored a converted try to regain the lead 14-12. Our 4 sub forwards were used and gave as an important lift with the hard hot conditions draining the energy out of our performance.
Fullback for the day Mark Culhane scored a converted try in the 63rd minute to allow us to edge ahead 19-14. So with 3 tries under our belt the search for a bonus point was on but not before winning the match. A high tempo last 20 minutes with some entertaining rugby from both sides. Mark Culhane who was playing his last match before heading to the USA for a 6 month working/studying stint scored a try from long range after running a great line. A couple of minutes of injury time and we were happy to have survived and with a bonus. Knowing full well that we didn’t play our A-game and a lot of that was because we didn’t bring the right desire and attitude to the game, something we need to improve if we are to finish the season in the right fashion.
Departing Mark Culhane was rewarded for an outstanding performance with the bottle of bubbles for player of the day. Well deserved for a man who has missed 1 training session and started in every AIL game this season improving and becoming more confident with every performance.
It wasn’t until the good size crowd that had gathered in the old club house had thinned out that we got word back that Queens had done us a huge favour and beaten Ballynahinch meaning that we are now 6 points clear of them and assured of topping the table with our last match against Nenagh Ormond to play.
The task now is keep ourselves stimulated and focused towards a very tough match at Nenagh Ormond on Easter Saturday and finish the deal with a team performance that does a successful AIL season justice.
