Wanderers Junior Selection took on Waterloo , from England, on Saturday in a match for the famous “Percy The Pike “ Trophy, which had been last played for in 1998 between the two clubs first teams.
This famous trophy has been played for since 1935, and both teams gave 100% in their efforts to retain/regain the trophy.
The first half was very close and hard fought with Wanderers ahead at the break thanks to a try from Steve Duggan
Upon the resumption of the second half, Wanderers pack raised their game against their more experienced opponents and as a result took a 17-13 lead thanks to a try from No 8 Bill o Meara. The Waterloo pack and team never panicked, and making full use of all their experience , upper their game and came back aggressively, scoring a easy try under the posts following some quick thinking by their scrum half.
Wanderers tried to retrieve the situation but time and some excellent Waterloo defending were against them, and the visitors held on for a well deserved victory.
It was a very hard fought match and was a very good workout for the Wanderers Juniors ahead of their league campaigns.
Best for Wanderers were K Daly, D Kearney, G McNamara and B o Meara in the pack, and S Duggan, E Kelliher, D Jelly in the backs.
Both teams retired to the clubhouse and a great day was had by all.
