Wanderers 20 V Suttonians 15, U13/14s

 

Sunday 28th Sept , Merrion Rd

Wanderers U13/14 took on Suttonians last Sunday in a friendly match in Merrion Road. It was the first game of the season for both teams and both teams were eager to start the new season with a win. This is a match that has built up quite a tradition over the years and have always being close, hard fought encounters played in the best sporting spirit.

Wanderers started well enough with some good interplay between backs and forwards , with strong running from the forwards and good passing from the backs, and took a early lead with a try from Timmy O'Driscoll which was not converted.

Suttonians hit back strongly with their pack in particular taking control , hitting the rucks aggressively , supporting the ball carrier at all times and they looked very dangerous in the backs when the ball was run wide. They had a left winger who was a constant threat every time he got the ball and he has the potential to be very good player.

Wanderers were playing poorly at ruck time and it resulted in a number of turnovers which Suttonians took full advantage of , running in 3 tries in the first half to take a 15-5 lead.

Strong words were said at half time to the Wanderers team about the need to hit the rucks with aggression, support the ball carrier and make the tackles count.

The second half resumed and the Wanderers team upped their game and started to play with more aggression as they started to wrestle control from Suttonians. Tries came from Chris Kenny and Andrew Hunter which werent converted to bring the teams level and in a frantic last 5 mins flanker Rex Ingram scored a try which clinched victory for Wanderers.

It was a satisfactory game for the U13/14s , in which the team spirit was excellent throughout and it also showed that there is lots of areas to be worked on in training.

All players played a important role in the win and credit to Suttonians for another very enjoyable game that was played in great spirit throughout."

Training continues every Sunday at 11.00 sharp in Merrion Road
