This season so far has been all about bonus points and unfortunately they have not been the bonus points for scoring 4 tries. So once again after a competitive display we only came away with a losing bonus point. It is clearly evident that we put ourselves in position to win these games but the old cliché that losing becomes a habit which is hard to break is alive and well with this Wanderers team. Unfortunately at critical times our discipline fails us and this is particularly disappointing regarding Saturday’s game because if Bruff were still playing they would not have scored a try.
So why did we not win this game, mainly down to our lack of discipline in key areas in the park and conceding unnecessary penalties in kicking positions for Bruff. Our own kicking game was not at its best; however it was a big ask for Rory Pratt to take over the duties as all our recognised kickers weren’t in the country. Our scrum came under pressure at important times in the game and also in important areas in the park. And finally at times we did not respect how important holding onto the ball is and forced passes when they weren’t on, got isolated in attack, and at times kicked the ball away needlessly when we needed to keep the ball in hand.
During the week we talked about control and highlighting the fact that the opposition can put us under enough pressure without putting ourselves under pressure, however we seem to have this self destruct button which allows the opposition to gather momentum through our errors, and this was the story of today. 9 of the 12 point scored came about as a result of us turning over the ball when we actually had it, forward passes, isolated in the contact area, critical scrums etc. so even after probably scoring our best try of the season and really having ourselves in a position to win the game we self destructed.
Therefore we must ravel down to clonakilty next weekend knowing that a win is the only acceptable outcome. It’s a difficult position to be in and we really test our discipline and attitude to see if we can dig ourselves out of this trench and get the badly needed victory.
