Wanderers Under 18s win League and are going for the Double!
17/04/2008
Wanderers Under 18's Have Won Their League.
They now take on Greystones in the semi final of the Cup.
The Double is on the Cards but Hard Matches Ahead.
They say that good things come to those who wait! This can be truly said about this years under 18’s the bulk of whom have been together for the past 4 years and have this year won the under 18s Metro League. We started away to Coolmine losing out on an almost unplayabley wet day in Castleknock College. This was followed by a big away win in windswept conditions in Greystones, the highlight being a breakaway try by Richard Liddy. True to form we then contrived to lose away to Unidare in DCU, it has to be said not helped by the conditions on the day!
Our first home game of the season came against St Bridgits who were comprehensively beaten in Merrion Road. Two up, two down, not the most auspicious start to the season.
The New Year was to prove much more fruitful. Starting with two big home wins against DLSP and Coolmine. The crucial match of the season proved to be the home leg against Greystones in February, 5 points up going into injury time, we conceded a late converted try to trail 10 points to 8. From the restart we encroached deep into Greystones 22. An offside decision gave us the penalty that Tom Kelly slotted to win the game 11-10 . A win against Unidare in Merrion Road on 24thth of February sealed the league with two games to spare.
While it would be unfair to single out any players for what was a great team performance over a season, it would be fair to point to Gavin Donovan and Oisin Murray as key performer’s thoughout the season in the pack and Shane Robertson and our leading try scorer Richard Liddy out wide.
At the time of writing we are due to play in the semi-final of the U18’s Cup, here’s hoping for a double celebration for a group of committed, loyal and persistent group of players who hopefully will be a key part of the Wanderers Club scene over the coming years.
