Previous History of Matches between Wanderers and Bruff. 26/04/2007 THE 2006 / 07 AIB CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS compiled by Des Daly on behalf of AIB DIVISION THREE : ( 1 ) LEAGUE ( 15 rounds ) Division Three was introduced in September 1993 and has been in operation now for 14 seasons. Twelve different clubs, representing all four provinces, have won the Division Two League series with UCD ( 1993 / 94, 1998 / 99 ) and Greystones ( 2001 / 02, 2004 / 05 ) achieving the distinction twice. The 14 winners have been : UCD ( twice ), NIFC, Monkstown, Buccaneers, Portadown, Ballynahinch, Thomond, Greystones ( twice ), Waterpark, Highfield, Clonakilty and Wanderers. The list includes four clubs from Leinster, three each from Ulster and Munster and two from Connacht. On all 14 occasions the club finishing first in the Division Three table has been promoted into Division Two for the following season. ( 2 ) CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFFS Division Three play-offs were first arranged at the end of the 2001 / 02 season. The winners have been : Connemara in 2001 / 02, Wanderers 2002 / 03, Greystones in 2003 / 04 and 2004 / 05 and Clonakilty in 2005 / 06. An Ulster club has previously appeared in Two Division Three Championship Finals but has yet to win the title. Three League winners, just promoted, have failed to go on and win the Championship – Greystones in 2001 / 02, Waterpark in 2002 / 03 and Highfield in 2003 / 04. 2006 / 07 FINAL WANDERERS v BRUFF at Templeville Road Saturday 28 / 04 / 2007 ( 2 pm ) Referee : Colin Stanley ( Ulster ) • Last five AIB League games this season: WWWWW WWWWL • The regulation AIB League fixture between the two clubs took place this season on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Lansdowne Road Result: WANDERERS 24 ( three tries ) BRUFF 10 ( one try ) • In the 2007 AIB League Division Three semi-finals played on Saturday 21 April, 2007 WANDERERS beat INSTONIANS 47-29 at Merrion Road BRUFF beat BALLYNAHINCH 29-3 at Ballymacarn Park • Beginning in 2004 / 05, the two clubs have met three times in the AIBL, all games in Division Three The results read W – 2, D – 0, L – 1 in favour of Wanderers who today are on a hat-trick of victories over the Co. Limerick club. • Today is the third Munster v Leinster Div. Three Final ; Wanderers beat Waterpark 51-5 in 2003 while Clonakilty beat Suttonians 19-12 in 2006, both games at Lansdowne Road. • A Leinster club has always appeared in a Division Three Championship Final. • Today is the first Division Three Final not to be played at Lansdowne Road. • Wanderers have spent two seasons in Div. One, ten seasons in Div. Two and five seasons in Div. Three while Bruff have played three seasons in Div. Three after winning the 2003 / 04 junior clubs round robin at the third time of asking. • Wanderers won the Division Three Championship in 2002 / 03 and the League Series this season while Bruff won the All-Ireland U-20 Championship in 2000 / 01 and were runners-up the following season • The AIB League Division Three winner will receive a Union Plaque and 25 medals. Both finalists will receive a cash prize. WANDERERS • The story on the road in AIBL / AIBC competitions so far this season : P – 7, W – 6, D – 0, L – 1. • The only AIBL loss this season was 15-16 at Magherafelt against Rainey OB on Oct. 21. • Today play their fifth AIBL fixture against a Munster club this season and have won all four previous games. • Have played 59 AIBL fixtures against Munster clubs and won 26 of these games ( 47 % success ). • Have won their last 14 AIBL matches. • Finished this season with the best ( + 40 ) tries differential in all three League divisions. • Have played the second most ( 221 ) AIBL games of all the Irish clubs. • Are captained today by hooker Bevan Cantrell who also skippered the club to the Div. Three title in 2002 / 03. • Bruff will face a number of Limerick city men in the Wanderers ranks today – Cantrell, Fitzgerald, Treacy, Likely, Ryan et al. • Over 15 Division Three rounds this season, conceded the least ( 14 ) tries in all three League divisions. • Are currently ranked 33rd of all 48 Irish senior clubs and 25th in the all-time AIBL list. BRUFF • The story on the road in AIBL / AIBC competitions so far this season : P – 8, W – 6, D – 0, L – 2. • Have played 11 AIBL fixtures against Leinster clubs and won 6 of these games ( 55 % success ). • Lost their two-season unbeaten record away in Leinster when they arrived at Merrion Road last February. • Finished the League season as the top Munster club in the third division. • Unlike Wanderers, the Co. Limerick club has never appeared in an AIBL Championship Final before. • Have three Carroll brothers and three Cahill brothers in their current senior squad. • Made the play-offs in their second AIBL – 3 season but lost 3-24 away to Clonakilty in the semi-finals. • Are located 15 miles south of Limerick City slap in the middle of JP McManus country. • Since October 14 have not conceded a bonus point for tries during their 16 AIBL – 3 games. • Top try scorer Finbarr ‘Braq’ Hogan and assistant Eoin Cahill have seen time in Division One with Young Munster and Shannon. • Are currently ranked 35th of all 48 Irish senior clubs and 43rd in the all-time AIBL list.
