The inagural Jim Dunne Memorial Trophy match was held in Portmarnock Golf Club on the eve of the AIL game. Wanderers were represented by Ned Mc Quaid,Bob Wynne,James Murphy,Sam Simingon,Brian Tector,Ronnie Cosgrave,Kevin Brophy,Richard Tector,Brendan Mc Kenna.
The Wanderers Team faced a strong Lansdowne Team led by Michael Kearney with Basher Boylan as his wing man and a good support team. Five fourball better ball matches was the format and the final result was 2.5 to 2.5 a draw.
This was an appropriate result for the inaugral match. All concerned were agreed that this would become an annual event as Jim had many friends in both clubs. As is usual with events run by Ned the sun shone on the glorious links of Portmarnock and the wind did not blow, as a result most peole played quite well and were pleased with their golf.
The Dublin 4 crew's then hightailed across town and assembled in Gleesons for some light refreshment. Many stories of Jim were retold with gusto and a very plesant evening insued. I am sure Jim would be pleased to know that all concerned are keen that this match should continue.
It must be noted that our neighbours in Lansdowne Rd are not a bad bunch particularly as they insisted on hosting the match on this occasion, for which the Wanderers members were most appreciative.
However after the initial friendly draw i suspect this match will have a bit of an edge in future years as with all Wanderers Lansdowne tussels.
