J2 “A” League, Wanderers 28 Skerries 3
Wanderers Junior “A” team got their league campaign off to a good start with a hard fought victory over a tough and well drilled Skerries Team in Merrion Road on Saturday.
The first half was a very tight affair, with the game being played out mostly between the 22s. Both packs slugged it out whilst the backs ran with good intent. Wanderers lost key forward Mike Shelly through injury midway through the half but the forwards to their credit regrouped and pressed on. The Score at half time was 13-3 with Wanderers try coming from Barrai Brennan and Enda Kelliher weighing in with a conversion and 2 penalties to a Skerries penalty.
The second half continued to be tough going for both teams, with aggressive rucking and tackling from both teams being the order of the day. Wanderers pulled away in the last ten minutes with tries from Brian McFadden and Robert Kilroy, with Enda kicking a conversion and a penalty to leave the score at 28-3 at the whistle.
In summary: a good start to the League but the score line is misleading , as Skerries were a well drilled team and only some desperate last ditch tackling kept them out of the try area. There is a lot to work on in advance of the next match, which is against a strong UCD team in Belfield next Saturday 6th October.
Pick of the pack were N Flynn, G McNamara, B o Meara and W Martin Smyth in the pack, whilst all the backs played extremely well .
