WANDERERS FC 2007-2008
A FEW WORDS FROM OUR COACH / DIRECTOR OF RUGBY
Well before we know it another AIL season is upon us and the exciting prospect of taking on the Second Division for the first time in 6 seasons. After last season success the message has been to look ahead to our huge new challenge as another big step. So extra effort has gone into the pre season training that started the last week in July.
P.J. Ryan has done a great job in the recruitment of players meaning there will be an even more competive Senior Squad this season. With the J1s playing in the upper half of the competion and the Seniors in the Second Division this is important in order to develop a larger group of players capable of playing at these higher levels.
The other huge gain is that the coaching ranks have increased, with Emmet Byrne and Christian Warner both on board working as specialist skill coaches with the Senior Squad. Emmet has come home to Wanderers where his successful career started and brings alot of knowledge from his experiences in the front row at all levels. Christian who hails from Australia, is currently playing for Leinster and has a great understanding of back play. For both of them this is their first coaching experience so we give them a big Wanderers welcome.
Bevan Cantrell will Captain the First’s and will be assisted by the presence of plenty of senior players who have been with team over the last few seasons. Bevan is a great Captain his commitment on and of the field alone enough to inspire those around him.
Outhalf Billy Tracey is back and super fit, as ever his general play along with his goal kicking is of huge importance to us this year. Second Row combination of Vic Ball and Paul Ryan will be a force to be reckoned with and back rower Kolo Kiripati is back with a friend Donny Latu who plays in the front row. Brendon O’Brien the scrumhalf will be looking to progress from last years great season.
Another player to keep an eye on is former President Kevin Brophy’s son Paddy. Paddy played for the winning St Michaels senior Cup team and represented Ireland at the u19 World Cup last season. He plays on the wing and has a great future; it’s pleasing that he is playing for Wanderers as I am sure he has some exciting times ahead.
In order for us all at Wanderers FC to continue our climb up the ranks higher standards and bigger collective commitment is going to be needed by all playing and non playing members.
I am looking forward to the challenge and your ongoing support throughout the season.
